The ROX 01 is neither a Tank nor a Land Cruiser — it's a Pininfarina-designed luxury glamping SUV: tailgate kitchen, king bed, 469 hp REEV, and 1,115 km combined. The desert-trip family car that wants EV running costs without charging anxiety.
Gulf families who love desert trips and winter camping — wanting luxury, tech, and EV running costs without giving up the desert. Not for hardcore dune-bashers.
56 kWh at 7 kW = ~8.6 h from empty. Practically: plug in nightly, wake up at 80-100%.
Official figure: 30→80% in ~24 min. Peak kW not officially published — we estimate ~100 kW. You won't depend on DC anyway — the generator is your fast charger.
V2L: 4.4 kW — Two separate sockets: 2.2 kW in the trunk + 2.2 kW external = 4.4 kW total. Note: it's split, not one 4.4 kW socket — a single appliance gets max 2.2 kW.

The key Gulf point: the 115 kW generator can't sustain the motors' 350 kW peak — arrive at the dunes with a depleted pack and performance drops sharply. So on the highway, use Battery Hold to reach the desert with a full pack and full power.

Official companions, cockpit software, and tools every owner needs — with Gulf availability notes.
The world's largest community charging map — with owner check-ins
🌍 UAE: excellent coverage (1,100+ Dubai points). KSA: good and growing (EVIQ, Electromin). Kuwait: sparse but the only practical reference — no national Kuwaiti charging app yet.
EV trip planner — calculates charging stops for long Gulf road trips
🌍 Works in the Gulf but its charger database lags Europe (Saudi EVIQ stations may be missing) — pair it with PlugShare for intercity trips.
Read live EV battery data with a cheap Bluetooth OBD dongle
🌍 Used-buyer alert: true battery health (SOH) is NOT exposed via standard OBD on BYD — you get SoC and voltages only. For an authoritative report before buying a used BYD: dealer diagnostic (VDS) or a pro tool like the Foxwell NT710.
A second community charging map — real listings across KSA and the UAE
🌍 A great second opinion alongside PlugShare — Gulf coverage is thinner but real and verified.
Saudi Arabia's national fast-charging network (PIF + Saudi Electricity Co.)
🌍 KSA only — the must-have app for any EV owner in Saudi Arabia. Network targets 5,000 chargers by 2030.
Petromin's charging network — 200+ locations across Saudi Arabia
🌍 KSA — largest network by locations (200+), strong at urban/retail sites. Complements EVIQ.
The UAE's federal charging network — expanding nationwide
🌍 UAE only — key for trips outside Dubai (Northern Emirates, Abu Dhabi highways). Scaling to 1,000 chargers by 2030.
Dubai's original charging network — 400+ stations
🌍 Dubai only — registration is mandatory for DEWA public chargers.
Tips from real owners across the Gulf — heat, sand, prayer, Ramadan, travel.
Keep it plugged at home, pre-cool from the app while on the charger — pack and cabin cool on grid power, not battery. And charge to 80% daily, not 100%.
After a long hot drive, the cooling fans keep running minutes after shutdown to cool the pack and generator. Not a fault — no need to visit the dealer.
It's 2.5+ tons of monocoque on 21-inch road rubber — not a Tank. Fit 20-inch ATs, drop pressures, engage Sand mode, keep momentum. And the 22° approach means no attacking steep dune faces.
The 115 kW generator can't feed 350 kW peaks — a depleted pack means weak dune performance. Engage Battery Hold on the highway so you arrive with a full pack and full power.
Right after the dunes the pack is heat-soaked — immediate DC charging stresses it. Let it cool 15 minutes, or just let the generator handle the drive home.
The standard 275/45 R21 is great on tarmac, not on sand. A 20-inch AT option exists (275/50 R20 is cited — confirm with your dealer). A second set for winter camping season is money well spent.
Roughly one showroom/service point per country (Automak Shuwaikh for Kuwait). Book service early and ask about parts availability before buying. The KEZAD Abu Dhabi assembly hub is a good sign for future support.
The 7-seater has the full tailgate kitchen. V2L is two 2.2 kW sockets — run the hob on one socket alone, spread the rest (kettle, lights, cooler) on the other. Camp mode keeps the AC running all night.
Checklist to prep your EV for 50°C summers. Each item extends battery life and improves your daily drive.
Bluetooth key + remote control (AC, locks, charge status). Note: in China some smart-key features moved to subscription — ask your dealer what's included in Gulf spec.
Backup card — keep it in your wallet for dead-phone days.
The classic fallback — especially off-grid in the desert.
L2 standard on all trims — speed and gap management on highways.
Centers the car with ACC — relaxing on Riyadh-Dammam or Abu Dhabi-Dubai runs.
Automatic braking for obstacles and pedestrians.
Essential — the car is 1.98 m wide.
Surround view for tight parking and rocky trails.
China offers a paid higher smart-driving pack — unconfirmed for Gulf. Also note: no HUD on any trim.
Top Chinese safety rating.
Front, side, and curtains extending to row 3.
Stiffer and safer in crashes than ladder frame — at the cost of off-road extremes.
56 kWh NMC with active thermal management + 700 mm wading-rated sealing.
High-grade electrical sealing for motors and battery.
How do I X — quick tasks every owner should know.
Hidden features, easter eggs, and tricks you won't find in the manual — from real owners.
The single most important fact about this car: the generator makes only 115 kW while the motors peak at 350 kW — the difference comes from the battery. Enter the sand at 15% SoC and you're effectively driving a third of the car. Battery Hold on the way out isn't a luxury — it's mandatory.
In auto mode the engine starts generating around 20% SoC. Want a fully silent EV drive? Keep your charge above 30%. And if you hear it running in traffic — normal, it charges while stationary.
The 4.4 kW is not one socket: 2.2 in the trunk + 2.2 external. Put the induction hob on one socket by itself; kettle, lights, and cooler on the other. Pile everything on one and it cuts out at 2.2.
With the bed deployed, engage Camp mode: AC keeps running keyless without systems shutting down. With 56 kWh + a 70L tank, you can sleep cool all night and still wake up with plenty of range home.
At 50°C, keep it plugged at home even when nearly full — thermal management and pre-cooling draw from the charger instead of the pack. Charge to 80% daily, 100% only before a long trip. These two habits add years to the battery.
The factory 275/45 R21 has a short sidewall that doesn't tolerate big pressure drops in sand. The 20-inch AT option (275/50 R20 is the cited size — confirm with the dealer) gives more sidewall and more confidence. Air down to 16-18 PSI in sand and carry momentum.
After two hours in the sand the pack is hot. The easiest, kindest play: fill petrol, let the generator carry you home, AC-charge overnight. DC fast-charging a heat-soaked pack stresses it for nothing. And the cooling fans that keep spinning after shutdown — completely normal.
Some REEV owners run petrol-only — the most expensive way to drive one: 2.7 tons on a generator burns 8.5-10.5 L/100 km. Plug in nightly and do daily errands on electricity at 23.6 kWh/100 km — far cheaper than petrol, and the entire point of the car.
If an import ad claims '280 km EV range', that's optimistic Chinese CLTC. The official Gulf-spec WLTC figure is 235 km, and real summer driving with AC gives 180-220 km. Plan on the real number and live happy.
The top source of owner disappointment: comparing it to a Tank 500 Hi4-T or Leopard 5 in hardcore terrain. It's a monocoque with no diff locks and a 22° approach — its game is moderate sand, trails, and sabkha. In return it beats them all on road comfort, the kitchen, the bed, and tech. Buy it for family desert trips, not violent dune-bashing.
On the 7-seater, with row 3 up for passengers the boot shrinks dramatically. For a full-family camping trip, plan a roof rack or fold half of row 3.
After two years in production: no major drivetrain red flags — the headline finding. Recurring gripes: wind/tire noise at speed, an occasionally laggy screen, strong new-car odor, some smart-key features behind a subscription, and the paid ADAS upgrade. Annoyances, not dealbreakers.
